  8.   In this text adventure, you see the

  10. world of late 19th Century London
  11.  
  12. through the eyes of a 15-year old
  13.  
  14. waif, Toby Stubbins.  You are not an
  15.  
  16. ordinary street urchin, however;
  17.  
  18. you're part of the information network
  19.  
  20. that connects the great detective,
  21.  
  22. Sherlock Holmes, with London's
  23.  
  24. underworld.
  25.  
  26.  
  27.   But as you arrive outside of Holmes'
  28.  
  29. Baker Street apartment, you embark on
  30.  
  31. an adventure that will test every bit
  32.  
  33. of your street smarts-- Sherlock
  34.  
  35. Holmes has been kidnapped.  Supplied
  36.  
  37. with a single clue by the distraught
  38.  
  39. Dr. Watson, you must find and save
  40.  
  41. your patron from a horrible fate.

  44. PLAYING....

  47.   Text adventure aficianados will
  48.  
  49. probably find THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK
  50.  
  51. HOLMES to be a unique experience--
  52.  
  53. most adventures are filled with
  54.  
  55. descriptions such as:
  56.  
  57.  
  58. "You are at an intersection.  There
  59.  
  60. are exits to the north, south, east,
  61.  
  62. and west."
  63.  
  64.  
  65. and require you to continually type in
  66.  
  67. the direction you want to move.  Your
  68.  
  69. character moves around in the created
  70.  
  71. world like a piece in a board game--
  72.  
  73. one step at a time.

  75.  
  76.   THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES takes
  77.  
  78. a different, more intuitive, approach
  79.  
  80. to moving your character around its
  81.  
  82. world.  This adventure supplies you
  83.  
  84. with a list of "verbs" and "modifiers"
  85.  
  86. that you use to create two word
  87.  
  88. commands.
  89.  
  90.  
  91.   Thus, unlike other adventure games,
  92.  
  93. making a map of the surroundings isn't
  94.  
  95. really necessary-- if you want to go
  96.  
  97. to Cheapside (London's shopping
  98.  
  99. district), you may get there in a
  100.  
  101. flash by typing in "go cheapside."
  102.  
  103.  
  104.   You must remember, however, that you
  105.  
  106. sometimes cannot skip every point
  107.  
  108. between your location and destination.
  109.  
  110. If you want to "go smokeshop", you
  111.  
  112. must first "go cheapside".  The same
  113.  
  114. advice applies when you want to
  115.  
  116. manipulate objects-- if you want to
  117.  
  118. open a chest, you must first "go
  119.  
  120. chest".

  122.  
  123.   Obviously, THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK
  124.  
  125. HOLMES requires familiarity with it's
  126.  
  127. command list.  Fortunately, you may
  128.  
  129. view this list at any time by entering
  130.  
  131. "go list".  In any case, learning the
  132.  
  133. list is a small price to pay to enter
  134.  
  135. a world as intriguing as this one!
